SAG Elections Are Really, Super, Extremely Important

by Dana Franks on August 5th, 2008

Variety is reporting that 104 Screen Actors Guild members are running for 16 open seats on SAG’s board of directors. This election will make a big difference in the future of the union, particularly whether they’ll sign contracts with the studios without striking.

Screen Actors Guild logoBasically though, this is just a battle for turf, much like the gangs in “West Side Story”. Unfortunately, the two factions’ names are all wrong — the proverbial head lion is called “Membership First”, and the new kids on the block are “Unite for Strength”. Hardly the Jets and the Sharks.

But if it were, it would have a very interesting cast of characters. From Variety.com:

Unite for Strength’s 31 candidates include Adam Arkin, Amy Brenneman, Gabrielle Carteris, Dule Hill, John Carroll Lynch, Doug Savant, Ned Vaughn, Tom Verica, Marcia Wallace and Kate Walsh.

Membership First, led by SAG prexy Alan Rosenberg, is fielding 11 first-time candidates — including Scott Bakula, Keith Carradine, Joely Fisher and Alan Ruck. It also has 22 incumbents up for reelection, including Joe Bologna, Lainie Kazan, Yale Summers, JoBeth Williams and Scott Wilson.

Geez, I would pay good money to see the two groups locked up together for 48 hours and had to hammer this contract issue. Then we could borrow a clue from British “Big Brother“, who has its own special channel where you can watch the house the whole way through, and the public (or at least the SAG members) vote out who isn’t helping the process every few hours.

Think about Bakula and Carradine butting heads with, um, Adam Arkin and Doug Savant. Okay, it appears that Membership First has the really big names in their camp, but Kate Walsh and Joely Fisher would make one heckuva catfight.

(Note: I promise I will promote serious discussion and quit comparing SAG factions to reality TV stars when they actually decide what they’re going to do beyond play “Should I Stay Or Should I Go” five million times in a row.)
