Oscars Get Poor Ratings
Did you watch the Oscars? Well, if you didn’t, you’re not the only ones. And if you did, you won’t be surprised that the Oscars received poor ratings this year. They were, well, not very good.
The Emmys received the lowest ratings since 1990. The Golden Globes were truncated. The Grammys, though one of the best yet, did not get good ratings. And this Sunday’s airing of the 80th Academy Awards (Oscars) hit an all-time ratings low.
The Oscars wwas seen by 32 million viewers, down 24% from last year among the 18 - 49 age demographic and a 20% drop overall. The Oscars were in limbo during the WGA strike, so the time to prepare and market the show was less than usual. It showed - for those of us who watched, it was a dismal show. Jon Stewart, who hosted, did a decent job at his comedy. But with three nominated performances for Enchanted, two other song performances, and no skits… the Oscars failed to impress.
The viewership for The Oscars depends each year on those films nominated for the top prize. Years with films with box office appeal, like The Lord of the Rings, are up for contention, the viewership increases significantly. The 2004 show, the highest rated show in the past 5 years, was seen by 43.5 million viewers.
