Spinoff Planned for L Word’s Alice
For some of us, waiting for the final season of “The L Word” is pretty bittersweet. This is a show that has a very vociferous fan base, even amongst straight women, and most are grateful that the show made it past the unfortunate fourth season finale that featured one character kidnapping the child she co-parented with another. Now that it seems to have really hit its stride, the show’s ending (and probably with an obvious nod to the California same-sex marriage legalization in Tina and Bette, I’d expect.)
But the song may not be over for possibly the best character on the show, Leisha Hailey’s Alice. The frequently unlucky-in-love journalist is slated for a spinoff to be penned by TLW’s creator Ilene Chaiken, who plans to film a pilot in December.
Chaiken had indicated previously that she wanted to write a spinoff, possibly to air Internet-only, but she had declined to say who would be the character it would be centered around. Some were afraid it would be the very self-centered Jenny (played by Mia Kirchner), which most of the fan base seemed to merely tolerate based on online postings but who seemed to get more than her fair share of storyline.
But Hailey has proven herself to be a strong actress who has built a character who’s not perfect but always finds the snarky side of life. It should be interesting to see what Alice will do in the spinoff. Could she resurrect her old girlfriend Dana from the dead for us, please?
