Letterman Slams McCain After Cancellation
First off, I apologize for not putting up a daily TV post today. My day job ended up slashing my time to post. But the listing would’ve almost been irrelevant after President George Bush scheduled an Oval Office address smack in the middle of prime-time concerning the economy. Not a knock on him — this is a time when a lot of people are more worried about their jobs than the premiere of “Til’ Death”.
However, the really big story of the day was Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain announcing he’s suspending his campaign to return to Washington to work on a bipartisan solution for the current financial market freefall. One of the things he’s canceled is an appearance on the David Letterman Show tonight.
Letterman said that McCain called him personally and said he was headed straight to Washington for negotiations. Last-minute cancellations are hell on show runners, but Letterman said he was understanding about the situation. Which was fine and good until Letterman saw a live feed of McCain getting prepped to appear on “CBS Evening News With Katie Couric” at the same time his show was taping.
If there’s one thing about Letterman, he takes things very personally. This is the man who left NBC simply because the network brass used slight of hand to anoint Jay Leno to “The Tonight Show” host. So even thought he went to great lengths to talk about how McCain was possibly the only true hero he’s ever met from his POW experience in Vietnam, he did not mince words on his opinion of being dumped for Couric and basically being lied to in the process. He also asked what in the world Sarah Palin’s doing right now, since obviously someone needs to keep taking her candidates words to the people if he isn’t.
I am the first person to say that I do NOT talk politics on this blog. In fact, I get such a huge dose of it in my day job that I would rather forget that the election exists. But when Letterman loses it, it’s a sight to behold, even if it turns your stomach like it is for some.
Make your own mind up by watching the following YouTube compilation of Letterman’s reaction (including Keith Olbermann, who looked very uncomforable and ended up not having an easy time from the host himself in the end.)
Seriously, I’m leaving my politics at the door here. If you have something constructive to add to the discussion, feel free, Wholesale attacks on me and the candidates are not my cup of tea, and will risk banning.
