Webisodes Keep Webizens Happy This Summer

This summer may go down in history as the “Summer of the Webisode”. The first one that appeared online in July was “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”, was helmed by Joss Whedon and starring Neil-Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. The three-part series originally appeared for five days on its Web site, but it’s gone on to be available on iTunes, become the hit of Comic-Con, and to soon be available with extras on DVD. Heck, it even has a signature tea.

The new kid on the block comes from the “Saturday Night Live” troupe of writers and actors. “The Line” stars Bill Hader and Jason Sudeikis, was written by SNL writers Hader and Simon Rich, was directed by Seth Meyers, and exec-produced and financed by SNL creator Lorne Richards‘ production company Broadway Video.

The first ep in this series about two geek mates who wait outside a movie theater 11 days for the first two tix to the latest mega-super-awesome space action flick, is below.

The rest of the series can be found here. Will projects like this someday compete with primetime TV for advertising bucks? Most of the top 5 nets can pretty much count on at least a million eyeballs each weeknight for a show. But as YouTube dance battles become prime-time entertainment and companies figure out which revenue actually brings in the eyeballs in the end, anything looks possible.
