Ah, The Comedy of Online Dating

From Cynthia Littleton’s blog on Variety.com:

It’s not a group therapy session, but a staged reading for “The Good, the Bad and the Unbelievable: Real Life Stories of Online Dating,” a book-in-progress by Robin Mesger, senior veep of the Lippin Group, and Stacey Levin, director of current programming at 20th Century Fox TV.MacBook Keyboard

Mesger and Levin have been pals and professional colleagues for years. “Unbelievable” grew out of a plan for a chapter in a novel on which Mesger was toiling. When Mesger and Levin put their heads together, they realized they had more than a chapter involving online dating; they had a book.

This is a creative effort that’s being shopped as a book, but you really have to wonder about the lack of online dating as the basis of a sitcom somewhere. Is it because watching people write on computers is really boring and you’re just waiting for them to meet IRL (geek online lingo: “in real life”) and marry and have babies and do non-online stuff? Last I heard, that was the basic plot of “You’ve Got Mail” Either that or you’re watching a “Dateline NBC” extra-special report.

I hope that the planned book discussed above someday does end up onscreen somehow. Online relationships (both healthy and dramatic) deserve some laughs, just like a random paper company in Scranton (and Slough) shows us how humor can be found in drudgery.
