The British Invasion, 22nd Edition

The British Invasion, 22nd Edition

Not sure on the number in the headline, but I know it’s pretty high up, when you think of the Brit Mod invasion, and the Brit reality-show craze where the face of network TV changed drastically, or even just the fact that my dear mama on her rural Deep-South farm not only knows who Amy Winehouse is, but she worries about her. As much as Americans love to say we’re the best at everything, we do seem to appropriate a lot from the country that some of our ancestors fought to be free from.
It’s very interesting to see from Variety …read more

Emmys: Is Weirdness Good for Emmy Race? (Male Edition)

Emmys: Is Weirdness Good for Emmy Race? (Male Edition)

Over at the LA Times‘ “Gold Derby” blog, the title of the post says it all:
Could Steve Carell’s creepy role in ‘The Office‘ hurt his Emmy hopes?
The entry brings up some very good points. One is that three out of the five nominees’ submitted eps are from hour-long comedies, including Carell’s special double episode, “Goodbye, Toby“. In the past eight years, five of the winners submitted hour-long eps. Carell’s clearly trying to stack his deck, similar to the way Hugh Laurie just happens to have at least one ep each season on “House” tailor-made to reveal his crusty, broken heart. …read more

Emmys To Have 5 Hosts This Year

Emmys To Have 5 Hosts This Year

This year, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has added a brand-new category for Emmy voters — Outstanding Reality/Competition Host. And in response, all five nominees in the category for Outstanding Reality/Competition Host – Tom Bergeron (“Dancing with the Stars”), Heidi Klum (“Project Runway”), Howie Mandel (“Deal or No Deal”), Jeff Probst (“Survivor”) and Ryan Seacrest (“American Idol”) – have been named hosts of the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sept. 21.
"As we thought about the very important role of a host for this year’s show, it became more and more apparent that we should ask …read more

ComicCon SD 2008: A Look At ‘Fringe’

ComicCon SD 2008: A Look At ‘Fringe’

Courtesy of Mahalo Daily, here’s some attendees of ComicCon in San Diego talking about all the TV stars and directors they plan to see, along with a sneak peek at J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated new series, “Fringe”.

On a completely gratuitous and personal note, if anyone goes to the “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood” panels and gets video, please email me. I’ll be happy to post it with credit and squees. (I’ve never properly introduced myself here, but I’m a HUGE UK TV fangirl.)

TCA Reports: Conan/Leno Transition Date

TCA Reports: Conan/Leno Transition Date

NBC’s panel at the Television Critics Association press tour opened up with a “surprise” that really wasn’t that surprising — in a “stunt that fell a bit flat”, Jay Leno impersonated Jimmy Kimmel impersonating a journalist last week at ABC’s panel. Confused enough? Leno, wearing a bald cap, was “rendered…unrecognizable” to the Los Angeles Times’ “Show Tracker” (and yeah, he pretty much is), and didn’t offer questions as jokes. Even NBC Entertainment co-president Marc Graboff didn’t recognize him in the green room before the event.
But Leno did show that he’s willing to be a good sport and suck up …read more

TCA Roundup Part 1: The Return of Brenda and the Fate of Izzy

TCA Roundup Part 1: The Return of Brenda and the Fate of Izzy

Bits and pieces of press coverage of the summer TCA panels, broken into posts over the next couple of days:
“90210 2.0″: If most of the public heard about one thing that happened at the network panels overall, it’s that Shannen Doherty will be in the “Beverly Hills: 90210″ spinoff. Her publicist must be thrilled. People seem to overlook that there are, um, real teens in this show, and DVR Playground has a good look at them.  If you want to feel old, think about the fact that Shenae Grimes (who has Rob Estes and Lori McLoughlin as on-screen parents) was …read more

Few Surprises at TCA Awards

Few Surprises at TCA Awards

The winners of the main categories at the Television Critics Association Awards Saturday night should be no surprise to anyone who also keeps an eye on Emmy darlings, because they pretty much mirrored all the shows and actors hogging the hype for Emmy noms.
AMC’s “Mad Men” began their “first-ever” stampede through the awards season with the channel’s first-ever TCA awards for program of the year, outstanding new program and the year’s best drama. On the comedy side, the hot new show of the 2007 Emmys stayed on top. “30 Rock” took home best comedy, and Golden Globe winner and 2008 …read more
