October Road Cancelled, Cast Films Wrap-up for Fans

Image copyright Lisa Finnegan

October Road has been canceled, but cast members are filming a final episode that will resolve key issues and will be available online. “It’s sort of a tribute to our fans. It has already been written by our creatives and we’re going to shoot it ourselves. We really wanted — not only for our fans but also for us — to tie up some loose ends,” said Geoff Stults, who spoke to b5media at the Monte-Carlo television festival. “Bryan (Greenberg) and I don’t even know if the kid is mine. The writer’s know and Laure (Prepon) knows, but we decided to wait until the end.”

Prepon won’t say who Sam’s father is but believes it will surprise fans. “I am not disappointed and hopefully the fans won’t be either. Our writers are incredible and I trust everything they do and they definitely wrote it so it would be a surprise,” she said. “It was a great show and I am going to miss it.”

Prepon and Stults both say that while they believe October Road was short-lived, it is a good body of work that will help propel them professionally.

Prepon hopes to direct her first feature film based on a script she wrote with a friend. “Obviously acting is my first priority but directing right up there. One of the things that kills me is they were going to let me direct an episode of October Road in season two.”

She is pitching around the screenplay, which is about a game called Running Charades. “There is an underground group of people who play it in LA. You wouldn’t believe how many people in Hollywood play it. You don’t play poker anymore, you play charades. So we wrote a comedy about it and it’s awesome and I hope that by the time it comes out you know all about the game.”

Stults is in a film called “She’s out of my League” set for a fall release and is about to sign to do an independent film this summer.

Thank you! I wish this show was coming back for season 3 but I have great respect for the cast, crew, and show creators. I will miss October Road. Thank you for caring about the fans by giving us some closure.

I am anxiously awaiting the finale to find out who Sam’s father is. The fact that it will be a “surprise” throws a twist in things. Also, while you are at it, please find a way to bring Janet and Eddie back together.

I loved October Road! It was a nice break from Reality TV. It was a wholesome show to watch. I grew up in a small town and still live in it so I really loved the characters and Knights Ridge. I also loved the music! I am soooo Sad! It didn’t help the shows ratings due to the Writers Strike and time slot changes. If you didn’t have a DVR to record new episodes you would never know when to watch it since it wasn’t on consistently. The same thing happened with the show Vanished. I ended up having to watch the rest of the episodes on line. I don’t know why this keeps happening to all the shows I like! This was one of the best shows!

Please bring it back. And soon!!!
I wanna see how it ends. You left way to many opened questions about all the characters to stop it now…. I’d love to see who Sam’s father is, and I’d love to see Big Cat get what he deserves.

I am soooo depressed right now. I have been eagerly awaiting the new fall season of October Road and Grey’s Anatomy but just found out the October Road was cut. I first started watching the show when it aired after Grey’s on Thursday nights.
I think it may have picked up better had they left it there. I didn’t know about it until I saw the coming attractions that came on t.v. right before Grey’s was about to air.

I really hope that Nick is Sam’s father. Anyone else just wouldn’t seem right.

    Wow, I’m really bummed. :-(

Sorry to hear that October Road was cancelled. It was a great show and will be missed. What’s up with cancelling good shows such as this and continuing with the lousy reality TV. Is it $$$$.
How will it be known when the final is on the internet?

I was awaiting for the new season of October Road. :( It was a great show. I don’t think is fair for the fans to only have an “online season finale”. We deserve a special time in TV (abc) for the end of the great show.

Thank you so much for tying up the loose ends.  It is a very respectful and kind thing to do for your fans.I am a grandma and so very upset with todays television programs.  The networks wonder why there is such competition with cable.  Well, stop all of the ridiculous, no acting, or actors reality shows.  TV class is terrible these days.  October Road was a sweet small town family show.  Thanks so much for bringing it to us.

I absolutely loved October Road. I never allow myself to get attached to a show or the characters because one day I know it will end.. and I hate the heart break. But with October ROad, I could not help it. I even said to myself outloud, “Do it.. let yourself fall in love with this show!” Crazy, I’m sure… but I really loved this show… the characters.. the settings.. the supense… I will sooo miss it. Hopefully the fan show is still happening ! Someone let me know ! Thanks guys ! RIP OR !

I am so disappointed that this show was cancelled. This was one of my very favorite shows. I hate all this reality TV that is taking over. I think the network is really making a mistake by cancelling this show. Please bring it back to TV so that we can enjoy the show again. If it weren’t for the writer’s strike, this show would have taken off with viewers. Now there is nothing to watch on Monday nights.

I was truly disappointed with the cancellation of this show. My 20 year old daughter would visit me for mother/daughter night for this show!!!! Now we are hesitant to get involved with another series for fear it will only be cancelled once you’re hooked!!! Shame on ABC!!! If it didn’t do well on its time slot, the brainiacs should have realized that it should move it to another night. Good show, wrong time. That’s their job to know when to move something. Just sick to death of reality tv!! Let’s take all the wholesome, happy feeling shows off the air…smart idea in this happy world we live in…who needs a happy mind release!!

I absolutely loved this show and I’m really disappointed it won’t be returning. I agree with the other comments, there are so few shows that are worth watching, but October Road was one of them. If anyone knows what we can do to let ABC know how much we love this show and want it back, let us know. The writers strike really screwed up a lot of stuff. I want this show back!!!!!!

I can’t believe that they have canceled October Road. I have been waiting and waiting for the show to return. This is some B.S. T.V. never fully recovered after the writers strike! I know the show didn’t have low ratings. Maybe the creator should try to sell the show to another network. I would definately follow. October Road was one of the few shows that could actually stomach to watch. Grey’s Anatomy, and Desperate housewives suck so bad now. These networks need to get it together! Please, let us know when the finale episode will be available for viewing, and if season 2 will be on sale . I bought the 1st one @ target last winter!

So So disappointed to hear about the cancelation. I kept checking for the show to start. Already had the DVR set to record this show and Men in Trees so it would not have mattered to me when it aired I was going to make sure I did not miss it. There are too many reality TV shows. We should start refusing to watch those so the wholesome shows have a chance of survival. I know some of the reality shows are great but come on they are taking over!

I hardly take time to watch tv and never to watch shows, but this was a can’t miss. How long has it been since there was a good, clean show without trash that didn’t run out of script after the first season. Of course the ratings were no good; you guys moved the time slot so much no one could find it. I used to watch grey’s but everyone’s out of people to sleep with. Hat’s off to the actors for finishing the show. When’s it going to happen.

    February 8th, 2009 | 1:46 pm

Yah, I will miss October Road. I also understand Boston Legal will soon be gone.
Thank God the executives at ABC really know what we really like. I can’t wait for another show like the Bachelor, or Who wants to be a Millionaire? That’s really great entertainment!
No wonder the cable networks like TNT are cleaning up.
Network TV thinks they can prosper by building a line-up around 2 or 3 over-the-top dramas, and hope we’re to dumb to change the channel.
    Guess what, TV execs…
    IT AIN’T WORKING!!!!!
By cuting October Road you’ve clearly demonstrated that you’re over paid and should be fired.
If I had the time, I’d personally revive the show and put it on TNT. They get it.
In fact, I’m curious as to why no cable channel has picked up this show.
I know the writer’s strike was a problem for many shows. That the strike contributed to the loss of October Road was regrettable in the extreme.
As an aside, generally, I have to side with the writers. Creative is under paid and their contribution is very much under appreciated. Just consider the history of the Record Industry. Artists (creative) get pennies. Its disgusting. Well, TV execs are little better. They give us a couple ‘Big Dramas’ and promote the heck out of a generally dissappointing lineup.
    TNT…PLEASE pick up October Road.

According to Amazon.com, the complete second season DVD, which is currently being Pre-Sold for $21.99, is scheduled to be released, and I quote, “This title will be released on May 5, 2009.” The second season DVD is described as including the short “Wrap-up”. If I recall reading, the Wrap-up will resolve many questions left unanswered at the end of season two; but may only be around 15 minutes in length. Of this I am not sure. It is just what I’ve read. Personally, I’m sincerely hoping for a full hour.
On a side note, I’ve read that the October Road writing team is responsible for the abc network show Life On Mars, now in its second season. Small consolation…I like the show; but it is no October Road. I understand that several October Road cast members have been, or will appear on Life On Mars, eg, Ronnie (Nick’s brother).
Much as I’d love to see October Road revived, as many cast members have doubtless moved onto other projects, it would take a stroke of magic to revive October Road at this point. Perhaps a flood of very pointed emails directly to abc may make them realize their ERROR, or at least help prevent this from happening in the future. From my point of view, however, the network seems to be clueless! Truly regrettable!!!

    February 26th, 2009 | 5:17 pm

It seems to me that ABC could be a little more forthcoming about the final ‘Wrap-up’ episode. Perhaps their embarrassment, having mistakenly cancelled the show in the first place, has them afraid to raise the issue in any form. It seems any word from ABC will only garner more criticism from viewers. When you consider the existence of ABC Network shows like ‘TRUE BEAUTY’…
Personally, I want to scream! …but, what I do instead is tune into TNT. They get it!

I guess ABC wanted to save money.
Aren’t the ‘Reality shows’ cheaper to produce?
They don’t mind if they’ve caught our interest and then left so many questions unanswered.
ABC clearly doesn’t care about their audiance, if they can save a few bucks.
Do they really think replacing October Road with some of their recent ‘Reality shows’ is a fair trade-off for the audiance???
How could they justify just killing the show with so many fans and so many issues left up in the air…unanswered?
Why should we trust ABC now, and become invested in their new programs when they’ve shown their true colors.
I feel like they’ve just pulled the rug out from under us…and for what? To save a few dollars?
They don’t care about us in the least!
    Thanks ABC…NOT!

but then, it does speak to the attitude of ABC toward its loyal viewers.
Too bad loyalty doesn’t go both ways…ABC!

Well, the Complete Season 2 DVD of October Road has arrived.
Here’s part of the Amazon .com description:
“While fans will likely never be truly satisfied with anything less than several more seasons of October Road, the 10-minute bonus “Road’s End: the Final Chapter,” created specifically for the DVD, offers the next best thing: a closing mini-episode that answers the questions: the identity of Sam’s father, the fate of Nick and Hannah’s intense relationship, and a look at how the whole gang is doing seven years down the road. Other bonus features include three minutes of bloopers and a six-minute behind-the-scenes guided tour of the sets. –Tami ”
I had pre-ordered a copy from Amazon; and I received it a couple weeks ago, and yet, I have yet to watch it. I’m thinking I’ll watch the series from the beginning (on DVD) and slowly work myself up to the end. If it ends badly, I at least want to enjoy the series in total and keep the expectations alive just a little longer… like a last kiss before a lover’s long absence…

This was one of the best shows on TV!!!!! I can’t believe there are all these reality shows being brought to the networks and have replaced the good storylines like October Road. Why is it being cancelled? What a disappointment.

Hey Jay, thanks for the link to the finale. I kept wondering when the online episode would appear. I miss the show but I’m glad to have answers to the questions in the show. Thanks again!
